Burglar spotted breaking in to apartment by Luas driver, court hears
Summary
A Luas tram driver saw 35‑year‑old Darren Canning throw an object through a ground‑floor window of an empty Carrig Court apartment near a tram stop. She called Luas Control, which monitored the apartment on CCTV until Garda Ciaran Kilcoyne arrived. Kilcoyne entered through the broken window, found Canning in the bedroom with a mobile phone, a camera and two zip‑lock bags of jewellery, and arrested him after pepper‑spraying him. Canning, who has no fixed abode and 67 previous convictions including 18 burglaries, pleaded guilty to trespass with intent to commit theft and criminal damage to the window on 1 March 2015. He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment, with the judge noting his resistance to arrest as an aggravating factor. The case was heard at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, with prosecution by Dara Hayes BL and defence by Luigi Rea BL.
