"Extraordinary" that former chairman is not on trial, Anglo jury told
Summary
In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing, a jury was informed that former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick was not a defendant in the case. Brendan Grehan SC defended Tiarnan O'Mahoney, former chief operations officer, who, along with former company secretary Bernard Daly and former assistant manager Aoife Maguire, pleaded not guilty to seven counts of conspiracy to defraud Revenue. The prosecution alleged that the trio concealed or omitted accounts linked to FitzPatrick from the bank's Core Banking System and from documents supplied to Revenue during an investigation into bogus non‑resident accounts potentially liable for Deposit Interest Retention Tax. Grehan argued that there was no evidence of loss to Revenue, no evidence that O'Mahoney knew the details of the accounts, and that FitzPatrick's alleged motive was to avoid future scrutiny as he moved from CEO to chairman.
