'Depraved' offender threatened gardai with bat and pit bull, drank bleach
Summary
Joseph Carroll, aged 44, was jailed for four years after pleading guilty to two counts of threatening to kill gardaí at a Tallaght address in May and July 2020. In the first incident, he emerged from a house bare‑chested, brandishing a baseball bat, a five‑foot plank of wood and a pit bulldog, threatening to kill the officers and telling them to shoot him. He was restrained by six gardaí and the dog was unharmed. Two months later, while on bail, he again threatened gardaí at the same address, brandishing a sledge‑hammer handle, a pickaxe and a bottle of bleach, and drank the bleach in front of the officers. He was restrained with incapacitation spray and refused medical treatment. The court noted he had breached a suspended 18‑month sentence from a 2018 public‑order incident.
