Pedestrian made false claim against Dublin Bus
Summary
David Gregan, 43, of Swords, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to one count of making a false statement to a solicitor on October 20, 2017. The court heard that Gregan falsely claimed to have suffered soft tissue injuries in a 2017 collision between a Dublin Bus and a car registered to Trinity College. An anti-fraud investigator reviewed CCTV footage and determined Gregan was not near enough to be hit by the vehicles. Although Gregan withdrew his claim in 2018 and no payment was made, the parties incurred €9,000 in legal fees. Judge Martin Nolan noted that Gregan had "succumbed to the temptation of what he thought was easy money." Considering Gregan's lack of previous convictions, his 25 years of work in the security industry, and his history of mental health difficulties, the judge ruled that a custodial sentence was not appropriate. He sentenced Gregan to 150 hours of community service in lieu of imprisonment. However, the judge adjourned the case to allow the Probation Service to assess Gregan's suitability for the order. The matter is scheduled to return to court on June 12.
