'I'm going to kill you and the kids. If I can't have you, no one will': jail for violent attack in front of children

Summary

In March 2023, a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard a case where a man violently assaulted his former partner in front of their two teenage children. He strangled her, broke her nose, and threatened to kill her and the children. The victim, who had a barring order against him, had asked him to help with the children, but he arrived drunk and attacked her. She managed to escape, and the children called Gardaí, who arrested him. While in custody, he was violent towards Gardaí, spitting and shouting about Covid‑19, and set his jumper on fire. He pleaded guilty to six charges, including assault causing harm and obstruction of a peace officer. Judge Elma Sheahan sentenced him to four and a half years' imprisonment, ordering that contact with the victim be limited to her solicitor for three years.
