He admitted the theft after fingerprints were found on the van and that he had been drinking and taking drugs, which he said caused him to forget what he did with the coins. Byrne had previously been convicted of four robberies and 12 criminal damage offences and was already serving a five‑year sentence for robbery and criminal damage. The new five‑year sentence will run after the two‑year term for the earlier offence expires. The court noted that Byrne's use of a replica shotgun during the Paddy Power robbery was treated as a serious offence because it could have been mistaken for a real gun.
