Experts fired bullets at tea towels in ballistics test, murder trial hears

Summary

In a Dublin murder trial, forensic scientist Dr. Thomas Hannigan testified that ballistics tests fired at tea towels suggested the accused, David Cully, shot his uncle Edward O'Connor from about eight feet, not the 30 feet he claimed. The tests used cotton sheets and a pistol and ammunition similar to those used in the killing, as the original firearm was not recovered. Lead residue was stronger on the tea towel shot from eight feet and on the victim's jumper, supporting the shorter distance. Cully, 41, admitted killing O'Connor, who died from two gunshot wounds to the back, but pleaded not guilty to murder and guilty to manslaughter. The trial, presided over by Mr Justice Carroll Moran, continues with a jury of twelve.
