Three former Anglo officials on trial helped Revenue investigate tax compliance at bank, jury hears
Summary
Three former Anglo Irish Bank officials – Tiarnan O'Mahoney, Bernard Daly and Aoife Maguire – are on trial for alleged tax‑evasion offences in 2003 and 2004. The prosecution claims they hid offshore accounts linked to former chairman Sean FitzPatrick and deleted references to these accounts from the bank's Core Banking System. The accused deny removing names from lists supplied to Revenue and deny deleting accounts. The trial heard that O'Mahoney had set up a team to assist Revenue's audit of the bank's compliance with Deposit Interest Retention Tax. Patrick Peake, a former fraud‑prevention officer, testified that the team gathered documents and searched for emails containing key names, including those of the accused. He also described a series of changes to FitzPatrick's account records, including name and address alterations, and the removal and re‑addition of FitzPatrick's name in 2004. The case is being heard in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court before Judge Patrick McCartan and a jury of twelve. Aoife Maguire pleaded not guilty.
