Heroin addict is sentenced to one year in prison for handling stolen cash box

Summary

Paul Clarke, 31, was sentenced to one year in prison for handling stolen goods after a cash box containing €50,000 was found in a garden shed at Marigold Crescent, Darndale. Gardaí discovered the box on 28 April 2014, with a pickaxe protruding and green dye indicating a security device. Clarke, who had green dye on his clothing, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He was arrested alongside Michael Byrne, 25, who had previously received a three‑year sentence for robbery, and Dean Slattery, 25, who was sentenced to four years with two years suspended. Garda Padraig McInerney explained the cash‑in‑transit van was robbed during delivery to AIB Bank, Raheny. Clarke claimed he had no role in the robbery and was only involved in attempting to open the box after the theft. He was known to Gardaí as a heroin addict and had spent most of the last 15 years in prison.
