Jail for car thief who drove stolen car at garda and left her with serious injuries

Summary

Eoin Murphy, 19, was jailed for driving a stolen car at Garda Karen Duffy, causing her a six‑centimetre scar on her forehead. The incident occurred on 28 August 2013 when Murphy, allegedly "stoned" on tablets, drove a stolen Nissan Micra at high speed between a patrol car and a parked vehicle. The Micra's passenger door struck Duffy's head as she tried to re‑enter her patrol car, breaking her nose and opening a wound on her forehead that required 30 stitches. Duffy suffered severe bruising, photophobia and was diagnosed with Post‑Traumatic Stress Disorder. Murphy, who had 30 prior convictions including three for car theft, pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and unlawful use of a car. Judge Mary Ellen Ring sentenced him to three and a half years, suspending the last year due to his good work with Probation Services.
