In the Central Criminal Court, Christopher McNamara, aged 21, pleaded not guilty to the murder of James Boyce, aged 71, which occurred between 6 and 7 March 2011. The jury heard that on 24 March 2011 Garda Brian Begley had searched McNamara's home and seized items including a pair of white gloves and a 42‑inch LG television. The television had been given to McNamara's mother, Pauline Whelan, on 7 March, and McNamara claimed he had obtained the money for it by robbing two building sites. A statement by Garda Patrick Hogan detailed the seizure of car keys from Michael Larkin McNamara on 8 March. McNamara's own statement, read to the jury, described how he bought a Toyota Corolla from Larkin McNamara on the night of the murder, paying €1,100 in fifty‑euro notes.
