Dublin man who struck man with his car and then reversed over him, causing "devastating" injuries, is jailed pending sentence
Summary
Ian Kelly, a 36‑year‑old mechanic from Castle Terrace, Phibsboro, was remanded in custody after striking Keith Lawless with his car and then reversing over him on 24 March 2012 at the Topaz Garage in Hartstown. The collision caused Lawless serious and permanent head injuries, including broken neck bones, a collapsed skull, multiple head fractures, a brain bleed, and ongoing impairments to speech, vision, balance, memory, learning, concentration and behaviour. Lawless was carried 10 to 12 feet under the vehicle, found unconscious and bleeding, and has since been described as a "shell of the person he used to be", unable to work as a roofer or play sport. Kelly pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious injury and was sentenced to ten days in jail pending a final sentence on 3 June. Judge Martin Nolan warned that Kelly would face a substantial term of imprisonment for the offence, noting the "devastating injuries" suffered by Lawless.
