Violent burglar jailed for subjecting elderly neighbour to 'savage' attack
Summary
Michael Joyce, 25, of Prussia Street, Dublin 7, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and false imprisonment on 9 January 2021. He attacked a 71‑year‑old neighbour, who lived alone, by pushing him into his apartment, demanding €10,000 and later €5,000, striking him with a hammer on knees, toes and ankles, and swinging a shovel that hit the victim's head. Joyce tied the victim's wrists and ankles with cable ties, locked the door, and demanded €100 a week from the pension. The victim escaped, raised the alarm and was hospitalised for six days. Joyce, who had 40 prior convictions, was sentenced by Judge Martin Nolan to four years in prison, to run consecutively to an existing sentence, after a guilty plea and mitigating factors were considered. The sentence was imposed at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The victim declined to give a victim impact statement.
