State pathologist tells court man was stabbed 30 times

Summary

In the trial of Andrew Gibney, 21, accused of murdering Gerard Burnett, 28, the State Pathologist, Professor Marie Cassidy, testified that Burnett suffered 30 stab wounds, six of which were deep and fatal. The wounds were caused by a single sharp‑edged knife, with moderate force, and resulted in death by blood loss to the right lung, heart and liver. No alcohol was found in Burnett's blood or urine, but diazepam was detected. Professor Cassidy agreed with the defence that two or three knives may have been used and that the multiplicity of wounds suggested a struggle and possibly more than one assailant. Witnesses, including Anne‑Marie Corbett and her husband, described seeing three men at Burnett's house, one holding a knife, and reported shouting "Denise." Burnett's partner, Denise Farrell, confirmed that three men appeared at the door and that Burnett was dragged outside. The trial will continue with further evidence on Wednesday. Andrew Gibney pleaded not guilty.
