Summary

In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing, a 20‑year‑old man pleaded guilty to distributing intimate images of his ex‑girlfriend without her consent. The offence occurred in September 2021, just months after the law criminalised such conduct. The man, who was 19 at the time, posted a collage of four intimate photos on Snapchat, where he had 1,100 followers, after the couple had broken up. The images were taken during their relationship, some when she was 17 and she was 18 at the time of the offence. Gardaí were alerted, and he was arrested in October 2021. He admitted the offence and made full admissions to the police. The victim did not attend the sentencing hearing, and a victim impact statement was submitted but not read. The judge, citing the immaturity and lack of foresight of the defendant, ordered a Probation Services report and adjourned the case for finalisation on 27 March next year.
