'I'm no saint, your honour,' thief tells judge before being jailed for six months

Summary

John Maughan, 35, of Cloghran, was jailed for six months after pleading guilty to possessing items for the theft of catalytic converters and driving without insurance on 10 February 2021. He admitted to driving a car with no registration plate, no licence, and no insurance, and was found with a trolley jack, a reciprocating saw, gloves and saw blades. Maughan, who has 119 previous convictions including 81 for road traffic offences, said he wanted to turn his life around and promised the judge he would never drive again. He was also found to have Covid‑19 at the time of the offence but did not inform Gardaí until his arrest. The judge noted his progress in custody, including education and addiction counselling, and imposed a 12‑month sentence with the final six months suspended.
