Suspended sentence for man caught with abuse material after gardaí intercepted 'child sex doll'

Joel Davantes, 56, of Drumcondra, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of child pornography on 25 October 2019. Gardaí intercepted a delivery of a "child sex doll" that was delivered by controlled delivery; Davantes said he did not think it was a sex doll. The doll's presence prompted a search of his home, during which phones, a laptop and a tablet were seized. 35 images were later found and were determined to be child abuse material, taken from the internet. Davantes had no prior convictions. Judge Elma Sheahan sentenced him to 12 months in prison, suspended in full on strict conditions, including 12 months of engagement with the Probation Service. The judge noted the offence was not victimless, the number of images was limited, and a probation report placed him at low risk of re‑offending.
