Father of three in claw hammer attack over 'unknown grievance'
Summary
Ramadan Kulla, 62, of Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm after striking a man with a claw hammer at Westend Retail Park on 25 March 2016. Kulla, who had no prior convictions, claimed an unknown grievance prompted the attack. He took a hammer from his jacket, hit the victim on the head, and a struggle ensued in which the victim seized the hammer and struck Kulla. Both men were hospitalized; the victim required three stitches. Garda Michael McClean presented CCTV of Kulla buying the hammer and a victim impact statement. Kulla's defence argued the victim's self‑defence and that the injury was self‑inflicted. Judge Martin Nolan imposed a three‑year custodial sentence, suspending the final 20 months, citing the seriousness of the offence and Kulla's lack of prior record.
