Summary

Robert Terry, 42, of Bentley House, Dun Laoghaire, was caught trespassing on a building site where he attempted to steal copper. Gardaí stopped him in the hallway, found a knife in his pocket that he claimed was a fishing knife, and searched him. He had previously pleaded guilty to attempted burglary at Mellifont Avenue on 19 October 2019. Terry has 54 prior convictions, many for theft, and has been homeless since 2010. He has worked as a plasterer, butcher, barman and fisherman, but stopped after an injury in 2019. He has struggled with addiction since 2008, is on methadone, and is awaiting a residential treatment centre. Judge Martin Nolan, hearing the case at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, noted Terry's remorse and sentenced him to 12 months in prison.
