Summary

In the night of 9 pm on 11 November 2022, Urantsetseg Tserendorj was stabbed in the neck by a 14‑year‑old boy who had come to rob her. She was taken to the Mater Hospital where doctors attempted to save her, but she died on 29 January 2023 after a severe hypoxic brain injury caused by the wound. The boy, who had been using drugs, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but the State rejected the plea and he was tried twice for murder. In the second trial, the jury found him guilty of murder by a 10‑1 majority after a three‑day deliberation. The case highlighted the boy's intent to rob and the accidental nature of the stabbing, but the court concluded that the knife was deliberately swung at her neck. The verdict was delivered by Judge Tony Hunt. The unnamed 14-year-old pleaded not guilty.
