Scenes in court after gang rapists jailed for attack on vulnerable teen
Summary
Mr Justice David Keane sentenced Dion Genockey (24), Troy Ryan (24), and Daryl Rooney (25) to nine years, nine and a half years, and 10 years respectively for raping a vulnerable teenager at Dollymount Strand in January 2016. The men were convicted following a second trial at the Central Criminal Court after a jury in the first trial failed to reach a verdict. All three maintain their innocence and have not accepted responsibility. Mr Keane noted the offence involved a high degree of degradation and that the victim, who had recently left State care, was subjected to further assault by two other men not before the court. Rooney, who has 225 previous convictions, received the longest sentence due to aggravating factors. Ryan has 24 previous offences, while Genockey has no prior convictions. The judge declined to suspend any portion of the sentences given the lack of remorse but placed all three under Probation Service supervision for two years post-release. Leave to extend legal aid for potential appeals was granted. The men have been in custody since the guilty verdicts in April. Supporters of the accused were removed from the court after shouting that the men were innocent.
