Summary
Patrick Cawley, aged 30, was sentenced to three years in prison for stealing six bottles of gin and several Yankee Candles from Marks & Spencer and Dealz. On 16 January, he entered the Dealz shop through a fire exit, began filling his bag with candles, and when confronted by staff he became verbally aggressive, threatening to stab them and to burn their cars. He pulled a knife from his jacket and made further threats, causing staff to flee. Gardaí later arrested him and found the stolen gin in his bag. Cawley admitted the thefts and has 97 prior convictions, including robbery, burglary and drug offences. The judge, Martin Nolan, noted Cawley's cooperation in custody and his reduced methadone intake, and suspended the final 15 months of the sentence, backdating it to 16 January. Patrick Cawley pleaded guilty.
