Summary

Niall Smyth, aged 30, was sentenced to 240 hours of community service for his role in a 2019 incident of "wanton thuggery" in Tallaght. He was one of six men who entered a garden on Dromcarra Avenue, smashed the windows of a Mini car parked in the driveway, and then smashed the downstairs window of a house. Smyth was the only member whose face was visible on CCTV, which identified him. He pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal damage. The incident stemmed from an altercation between Smyth's family and another family. The victims did not cooperate with Gardaí and did not give a victim impact statement. Smyth had no prior convictions except two old road traffic offences in 2011, and he was described as extremely remorseful. Judge Melanie Greally noted his lack of previous convictions, his work ethic, and employment history before ordering the community service.
