Man goes on trial accused of sexually assaulting wife by inserting objects into her
Summary
A man has gone on trial in Dublin accused of raping and sexually assaulting his wife over nine years by inserting various objects into her vagina while she was unconscious. He pleaded not guilty to 15 charges, including the use of a knife, cheese grater, bottle, carrot, banana, cucumber, tulip, wooden spatula, decanter stopper, part of a shoe, bicycle pump, deodorant bottle and his finger, between 1 January 2005 and 5 September 2014. The charges also cover anal rape and penetration of the woman's anus with his thumb. A forensic expert recovered 712 thumbnail images from the accused's laptop, showing female genitals and objects such as a high‑heel shoe, large kitchen knife, cheese grater, beer bottle, wine bottle, cucumber, carrot, banana and pencil. The prosecution argued the wife was unconscious and could not consent, citing video evidence found on the family computer. The trial continues before a jury of six men and six women.
