Thief jailed for making off with woman's bike
Summary
Richard McAleer, aged 22, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for stealing a bicycle from a woman who was waiting outside a shop with her sleeping children. The theft occurred on Lower Liffey Street, Dublin, on 10 November 2019. McAleer pleaded guilty to the theft. The victim, who was waiting with her children, saw McAleer mount her bike and claimed it was hers, but he insisted it was his. When she tried to take the handlebars, he pulled back his arm, made a closed fist, and fled after dropping the bike. He was arrested shortly thereafter while highly intoxicated. McAleer expressed remorse and apologized to the victim. He has prior convictions for theft and criminal damage and is currently serving a separate three‑month sentence. The judge noted his long history of offending, his difficult family background, mental health and addiction issues, and imposed a 20‑month sentence, with the final 12 months suspended on strict conditions.
