Trial of former Anglo chairman further delayed

Summary

The trial of former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick, aged 66, has been postponed again, with the start of evidence now scheduled for no earlier than Monday, 18 May. Judge Mary Ellen Ring, presiding at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, explained that the jury will not be called back until that date and that they will be instructed to keep their phones on. The delay follows an illness that has caused "serious timetable problems" and has already led to the jury being notified by telephone that the trial would be postponed. FitzPatrick pleaded not guilty on 14 April to 27 offences under the Companies Act 1990, including 21 counts of making misleading statements to auditors and six counts of furnishing false information. The charges relate to loans allegedly given to him or people connected to him by Irish Nationwide Building Society between 2002 and 2007 while he was an officer of Anglo Irish Bank.
