Summary

During a murder trial in the Central Criminal Court, witness Eamon Flynn testified that the accused, 36‑year‑old Ciaran Moran, often spoke of 'battering and torturing' Gerard Donnelly, a homeless man who had a large amount of money. Flynn said he had seen Moran purchase a fold‑up army shovel and an orange jump suit in October 2013, and that Moran had also bought a balaclava and a knife on another occasion. Flynn described how Moran would talk about Donnelly's money while drinking, and that he had borrowed money from Donnelly a few times. Another witness, Eamon Mahon, saw a blue canister, hammer and balaclava in Moran's bag. The jury heard that Moran did not stay in his hostel on the night of 28 November 2013, and that he was absent from the hostel on that night, returning the next day. The trial continues before Justice Margaret Heneghan and a jury. Ciaran Moran pleaded not guilty.
