Deceased sustained 30 stab wounds, murder trial hears
Summary
The Central Criminal Court heard that Andrew Gibney, aged 21, pleaded not guilty to the murder of Gerard Burnett, aged 28, who was stabbed 30 times and died in hospital. Gibney claimed he was stabbed by Burnett with a screwdriver four years earlier. Prosecutor Tom O'Connell said Gibney and others went to Burnett's house at Castlecurragh Avenue shortly before midnight, armed with knives. Gibney admitted to using a knife on Burnett three times, saying he was drunk and that the incident was triggered by alcohol. He claimed he had no intention to murder. Denise Farrell, Burnett's partner, testified that she saw three men at the door and that Burnett was dragged outside. The court heard that the cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the heart, right lung and liver. The trial continues before a jury with Justice Patrick McCarthy presiding.
