Summary

In a trial at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin, William Moran, aged 20, is charged with the 2012 murder of Martin Brophy, aged 22, at the old Waterford Institute of Technology building. Moran pleaded not guilty and is on trial. The court heard that Moran, in a voluntary statement on 29 May 2012, admitted kicking Brophy in the head ten times. In a Garda interview on 2 July 2012, he confirmed the admission, saying "I remember" and "I pushed and kicked him". He also stated that he had lost his phone on the night of 19 May 2012 and that the SIM card and phone were not together. Moran denied that the kicks caused Brophy's death, saying "he was still alive when I left". He also claimed he did not murder Brophy. The trial continues tomorrow before Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy and a jury of four women and seven men.
