Covid causing disruption to criminal cases

Summary

The recent rise in Covid‑19 infections has caused a series of adjournments in criminal proceedings at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin over the past fortnight. Three courts have been unable to sit because parties involved in cases have had to isolate. A murder trial at the Special Criminal Court has been delayed since last week after a judge had to isolate following a "falling foul" of the virus. On Monday, a violent domestic assault sentence hearing at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court could not proceed because the judge was absent; the same judge is also hearing a trial of three men accused of indecent assault. A sentence hearing for a convicted rapist in a 2011 random street attack could not take place as some parties are isolating. Another sentence hearing at the Central Criminal Court will not go ahead later this week because the judge is also isolating.
