'Barbaric' stabbing of victim of 'terrifying' family feud sees man jailed

Summary

Patrick McDonagh, 33, of Balbriggan, was one of eight men who attacked Martin Collins in a family feud on 7 February 2015. The attackers used two cars to ram Collins' vehicle, then assaulted him with golf clubs, baseball bats and slash hooks. While Collins was on the ground, McDonagh repeatedly stabbed him in the shoulder with a screwdriver, as other assailants struck him with weapons. Collins' brothers and his young son witnessed the assault, which left Collins with a broken arm, stab wounds and head cuts. He later required a plate in his arm and remains on painkillers. McDonagh had pleaded guilty to affray in April and was already serving a sentence for theft. In February 2016 he received seven years for driving a stolen car at a Garda. Judge Elma Sheahan sentenced McDonagh to three and a half years' imprisonment for the affray, to commence after his current term.
