Dublin man sentenced to five years for 100k cannabis possession

Summary

Jeffery Smith, 42, was sentenced to five years in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for possession for sale or supply of €108,114 worth of cannabis resin and €1,269 of diazepam, found in his home on Donomore Avenue, Killinarden, Tallaght. Smith admitted owning two stolen laptops and a stolen iPad, also discovered in his house. He claimed the drugs were held to pay a €25,000 debt incurred after becoming dependent on valium following a 2003 back injury. Smith denied being a dealer. The judge noted his modest criminal record and that he should have known the seriousness of his actions. Smith, with 20 prior convictions, did not reveal who he was holding the drugs for, citing fear of being shot. Defence counsel described Smith as having gotten involved in a situation far beyond his control.
