Man due to go on trial admits to murdering brother
Summary
Gary Murtagh, 48, of Broadstone, Dublin 7, admitted to murdering his brother Paul Murtagh, 42, at their family home on Auburn Street, Phibsborough, on 6 November 2020. He had originally pleaded not guilty to murder and guilty to manslaughter, but the plea was rejected by the Director of Public Prosecutions. The trial was scheduled to begin with a jury of ten men and two women, but was postponed. On the day the jury returned, Murtagh pleaded guilty to murder in the presence of the jury, ending the trial. Judge Paul McDermott accepted the plea, thanked the jury, and exempted them from service for five years.
