Michael Lynn to face 2023 retrial
Summary
Michael Lynn, a former solicitor aged 53, faces a retrial set for 16 October 2023 after a previous trial in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court ended with a hung jury. He was accused of stealing about €27 million from seven banks between 2006 and 2007, including Bank of Ireland, National Irish Bank, Irish Life and Permanent, Ulster Bank, ACC Bank, Bank of Scotland Ireland Ltd and Irish Nationwide Building Society. Lynn pleaded not guilty to 21 counts of theft covering the period from 23 October 2006 to 20 April 2007. During the original trial he claimed the banks knew he held multiple mortgages on the same properties and that this was a common practice in Celtic Tiger Ireland. He also alleged he had secret deals with bankers that allowed him to use loan money for property developments abroad. Prosecutor John Berry said the Director of Public Prosecutions sought a retrial to make certain enquiries following Lynn's assertions.
