Sex offender who previously attacked partner went on to twice rape her while on bail
Summary
In August 2016, a convicted sex offender raped a woman twice in his apartment in Laois. The victim told Gardaí she repeatedly told him "No, stop doing this, you don't want this", yet he continued, eventually turning her over and raping her anally. She described being horrified, frozen, and then fighting to push him off, but he was stronger and she ran out of strength. The offender had previously attacked the same woman in February 2016 by head‑butting her face and was sentenced in January 2018 to a five‑year suspended prison term, conditional on paying €4,000 to the victim, which he has not paid. He was also convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting a homeless teenager and was placed on the sex offenders register. At a hearing before Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo, the offender's defence counsel noted his mild intellectual disability and that he had claimed to be a victim of childhood sexual abuse. The unnamed teenager pleaded not guilty and was acquitted.
