Summary

A Dublin man, whose identity is protected to safeguard a child victim, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for assaulting his former partner and their 12-year-old son in April 2018. The defendant, a convicted rapist with 31 previous convictions, was found guilty after a trial of two counts of assault causing harm and one count of criminal damage, having denied all charges. He disregarded a barring order by visiting his ex-partner's home, where he became physically violent. The 12-year-old boy attempted to protect his mother and was also assaulted before calling gardaí. The woman sustained cuts to her head and face, while the child suffered cuts to his ankle and thigh. In a victim impact statement, the woman described the actions as inhumane. Judge Pauline Codd noted the lack of remorse and the defendant's disregard for the court order as aggravating factors. She sentenced him to four years in prison, suspending the final six months on conditions. This sentence will not commence until 2029, once he completes his current prison term for previous sexual offending.
