Jury fail to reach verdict in Michael Lynn's multi-million euro theft trial

The jury in the multi‑million euro theft trial of former solicitor Michael Lynn was discharged after failing to reach a majority verdict following more than 12 hours of deliberations in a three‑and‑a‑half‑month trial. Judge Martin Nolan asked whether the jury could reach a verdict if given more time; the jurors replied they could not, so the judge had no option but to discharge them. Lynn, aged 53 and from Millbrook Court, Red Cross, Co Wicklow, had pleaded not guilty to 21 counts of theft relating to Dublin property transactions between 23 October 2006 and 20 April 2007. He had claimed that banks were aware of his multiple mortgages on the same properties and that this was "custom and practice" in Celtic Tiger Ireland. He also alleged secret deals with bankers and a profit‑share agreement with former Irish Nationwide chief executive Michael Fingleton concerning a property development in Portugal.
