Romanian national jailed over €100k money laundering bust
Summary
Valentin Bulgaru, a 33‑year‑old Romanian national, was arrested in Dublin on 31 July 2021 after Gardaí found €104,905 in cash in his car. He pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering. Garda Brian McDermott described how Bulgaru was seen driving around the shopping centre, handling an object in the passenger seat, and later revealing the cash was intended to buy a truck in Belgium. Prosecutor Oisin Clarke noted that Bulgaru had accrued a €9,000 debt to a criminal gang and agreed to launder money to pay €3,500 of that debt. Defence lawyer Rónán Prendergast said Bulgaru had lived in the UK for one or two years, worked as a truck driver, and had minimal ties to Ireland, visiting only to collect the money. Judge Pauline Codd sentenced him to four years' imprisonment, with the last two years suspended and a five‑year ban on re‑entry to Ireland.
