Army officer accused of sexual assault changes legal team

Summary

An Irish Defence Forces officer, whose name is withheld by the military court, is accused of sexual and physical assault by two serving female members of the Defence Forces. He also faces charges of indiscipline and disorderly conduct while under the influence of an intoxicant. The alleged offences occurred at McKee Barracks in Dublin in June 2020. The officer appeared at a brief hearing on 9 May 2022, where a new legal team was appointed after his previous barrister withdrew due to a conflict of interest. Kevin Roche BL, instructed by Partners at Law solicitors, will now represent him. The presiding judge, Col Michael Campion, extended the officer's legal aid certificate to allow the addition of a senior counsel. Mr Roche requested a one‑month adjournment to review the case papers and advise his client. The matter was adjourned to 7 June, at which time the officer must decide whether a board will try any or all of the charges.
