Summary
Sean Powell, 23, was sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for robbing two shops in five minutes to obtain cash for a Valentine's date. He was arrested after Gardaí spotted his getaway car and found him hiding in a wardrobe, his feet protruding from the closet. Powell was intoxicated and unfit for interview for four hours. He admitted to the robberies, claiming he wanted money to take his girlfriend out. The court heard the couple had recently become engaged and had one daughter. Powell pleaded guilty to robbery of Eurospar and Carry Out Off Licence in Hartstown Shopping Centre on 27 January 2014. He had seven prior convictions for minor offences. Judge Martin Nolan accepted his admissions and rehabilitation efforts, but deemed a custodial sentence unavoidable, sentencing him to two and a half years.
