'Element of misfortune' in fatal injury to Urantsetseg Tserendorj, pathologist tells trial
Summary
During the Central Criminal Court trial, pathologist Dr Heidi Okkers explained that a stab wound partially severed Urantsetseg Tserendorj's internal carotid artery, cutting off blood flow to her brain and causing her death. She noted that injuries to the internal carotid artery are less common than to the external artery, which supplies the face. Dr Okkers agreed with defence counsel that the wound was not directly on the artery and did not fully dissect it, and that there was an "element of misfortune" in the injury. She also said the wound does not cause immediate collapse, allowing a person to remain conscious for up to two hours, which could explain how Ms Tserendorj walked to Connolly Station, met her husband, and entered an ambulance before collapsing. The trial continues before Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring with a jury of seven women and five men. The unnamed 16-year-old pleaded not guilty.
