Garda denies "ballyragging" suspect in alleged five-man rape
Summary
A Garda witness denied that investigators were "ballyragging" a suspect held for questioning over an alleged rape of a 17‑year‑old girl by five men. Four of the men are on trial at the Central Criminal Court and have pleaded not guilty to raping the girl on the night of 27 December 2016. The prosecution alleges the girl was taken in a car to a midlands location where the five men raped her "one after another". The four defendants, aged 22 to 24, also face charges of sexual assault and, for three, false imprisonment. The jury heard six Garda interviews of the fourth accused over two days in March 2017. During cross‑examination, the defence counsel claimed the accused admitted a sexual act after 16 minutes of silence in an interview room, alleging the Garda had pressured him.
