Lisa Smith warned family to become Muslims 'before it's too late', trial hears
Summary
In March 2022 the Special Criminal Court heard that former Irish soldier Lisa Smith, aged 40, had warned her family to become Muslims before it was too late. Smith, who denies membership of ISIS, sent Facebook Messenger messages to her sister Lorna in December 2015 while she was in the Islamic State in Syria. She told Lorna that she would never return home and that she would meet her family in heaven if they converted. Smith has pleaded not guilty to membership of an unlawful terrorist group, Islamic State, between 28 October 2015 and 1 December 2019, and to financing terrorism by sending €800 to a named man on 6 May 2015. The court considered thousands of messages exchanged via Telegram and Facebook Messenger between 2013 and late 2015, and the prosecution presented evidence of Smith's contact with jihadists and her view of ISIS atrocities. The prosecution was expected to finish its evidence the following day.
