Summary

Michael Corbett, aged 32, was sentenced to an additional 30‑month term for assaulting a prison officer with a homemade shiv on 19 October 2020. The shiv was made from a toothbrush and a blade. Corbett had previously been convicted of attempted murder of a 17‑year‑old at the Hellfire Club in 2016, for which he was serving a nine‑year sentence with six years suspended. The new sentence is to run consecutively with the six years he is currently serving. Judge Greally suspended the final 12 months of the 30‑month term for five years, imposing conditions including 15‑year post‑release supervision, weekly Garda station sign‑ins, medication compliance and mental‑health support. Corbett has seven prior convictions and is considered at high risk of reoffending. The officer sustained a head injury but was not seriously harmed. Corbett's defence highlighted his paranoid schizophrenia and medication non‑adherence. Michael Corbett pleaded guilty.
