Court to rule on expert's evidence in Islamic State trial
Summary
The Special Criminal Court will decide tomorrow whether to admit the opinion evidence of Dr Florence Gaub, a political scientist, in the trial of Lisa Smith. Ms Smith, 40, from Dundalk, has pleaded not guilty to membership in the Islamic State between 28 October 2015 and 1 December 2019, and to financing terrorism by sending €800 to a named man on 6 May 2015. Dr Gaub, a director at the European Union Institute for Security Studies, told the court that the Islamic State or caliphate announced by Abu Bakr al‑Baghdadi was the same as the terrorist organisation Isis, and that a person became a member of Isis when they joined the state "actively with any type of act of support". Such support could be a tweet, sending money, joining Isis‑controlled territory or carrying out a terrorist attack.
