Hellfire Club attempted murderer a risk to public if off medication
Summary
Michael Corbett, 32, was convicted in 2018 of attempting to murder a 17‑year‑old at the Hellfire Club, Montpelier Hill, where he used a knife and a piece of timber to strike a teenager. He received a nine‑year sentence, of which six years were suspended; the suspended portion was re‑activated in 2020 after he assaulted other inmates. In 2019 he pleaded guilty to assaulting a psychiatric nurse and was sentenced to five years, with the final two and a half years suspended, and was placed under strict conditions for 15 years. In October 2020 he tried to attack a prison officer at Mountjoy with a homemade shiv made from a toothbrush and a blade. He pleaded guilty to assaulting the officer and producing a weapon. His defence counsel argued that he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and was not taking his medication, making him a risk to the public.
