Gardai had concerns for Lisa Smith's safety after comments on local media, trial hears
Summary
In February 2022 the Special Criminal Court heard that Garda James Kilgannon had concerns for Lisa Smith's safety after comments on local media suggested she should not return to Ireland. Kilgannon explained that part of his duty was to ensure her safety when she began living with her mother in Dundalk. He noted that Smith had reintegrated reasonably well, was accepted by the community, and had complied with all bail conditions, including a curfew and daily sign‑ins at a Garda station. Smith's family were described as decent people who had cooperated with Gardaí. Kilgannon also revealed that Smith's family had alerted him to three voice messages and texts she had sent while in the Ain Issa camp in Syria, indicating she was in "tough and dangerous conditions" and that her husband had likely been killed. Lisa Smith pleaded not guilty.
