Garda whistleblower says serious allegations 'ignored' by management
Summary
In February 2022, a tribunal heard retired Garda Sergeant William Hughes claim that Garda management ignored his protected disclosures about policing failures in the unsolved murder of Baiba Saulite, a mother of two shot dead in Swords in 2006. Hughes said he had warned colleagues in 2006 about Saulite's domestic abuse history and later alleged mishandling of the case. After raising concerns, he was investigated for "failure to take appropriate action" and denied the charge. Hughes then went on sick leave from 2006 to 2009, suffered work‑related stress, and was paid half his salary during an investigation into his health. He alleged harassment, bullying and isolation by superiors, naming Assistant Commissioners Michael Feehan and Al McHugh. The disciplinary action against him was dropped in 2009, and Hughes retired in 2013 on medical grounds. The tribunal continues to examine his allegations.
