Seriously ill man gave over home for drugs use to fund funeral expenses

Summary

Philip Wesley, 57, suffering from advanced COPD, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to allowing his home to be used for drug preparation in July 2019 to raise money for his funeral expenses. Garda Conor Garland reported that officers entered the house by force, finding Wesley and two other men inside; the co‑accused attempted to flee into the back garden but were apprehended. Gardaí seized heroin worth €6,900, bagging material and other paraphernalia. Wesley had 25 prior road‑traffic convictions. Judge Elma Sheahan, after considering evidence of Wesley's severe health and low culpability, imposed a one‑and‑a‑half‑year sentence, suspended in full. No custodial term was imposed.
