Sex abuse made daughter feel like 'soul has been ripped out', court hears
Summary
A 48‑year‑old man was sentenced to three years' imprisonment, with the final six months suspended, for sexually assaulting his 15‑year‑old daughter in December 2018. He pleaded guilty to the assault that took place at his Dublin home. The victim, who was 15 at the time, described feeling a "constant fear" and that her "soul has been ripped out" in her impact statement read by the prosecuting garda. She said she no longer feels safe in her bedroom or house and experiences nightmares of her father smiling in court. The judge noted the psychological and emotional damage, including isolation, loss of trust, insecurity and emptiness, and stated the family unit had been irreparably damaged. The man had no prior convictions and had been in mental health care between 15 and 24 December 2018. The sentence was delivered by Judge Melanie Greally.
